HISTORY

Hayat Fertility & Women's Health Center was founded by Dr. Assem Harouny (FRCOG, FRCS) and was officially opened on January 25, 2007. The assisted conception specialists at Hayat have many years of experience in fertility treatment whether abroad (mainly in the UK and France) or at other hospitals and fertility centers in Cairo. Their success rates for various fertility treatments are approximately 50% — comparable to or higher than similar centers in the United States and Europe.

Dr. Assem Harouny

Dr. Assem Harouny

Dr. Harouny completed his M.B.B.Ch at Cairo University in 1972. He acquired extensive OB/GYN experience in England and Scotland, working at such prominent facilities as Simpson Memorial (Edinburgh University Hospital), Bangour Hospital, Stoke City Hospital, and Banbury Hospital (Oxfordshire). He was awarded the M.R.C.O.G. (UK) in 1981, the F.R.C.S. (Edinburgh) in 1983, and the Diploma in Microsurgery (Lubelana) in 1986. He was also recently awarded the F.R.C.O.G. (U.K).. In 1991, Dr. Harouny worked as an Assistant Professor at King Faisal University (KSA) before being appointed as Chairman of the OB/GYN & IVF Department at the private Hadi Hospital in Kuwait from 1992 to 2006. Dr. Harouny has worked in the field of Assisted Conception since 1986, initially with Professor Henning Pederson (Denmark) for three years, performing various microsurgical procedures (tubal and pelvic adhesiolysis, etc.). He later began managing assisted reproductive techniques (IVF, ICSI, and GIFT) after completing intensive training at Gottingen University Hospital (Germany) and South Manchester General Hospital (UK). In 1995, Dr. Harouny founded his first IVF center at Hadi Hospital (Kuwait) where he was able to achieve a pregnancy success rate of 45-50% for IVF cases. After returning to Egypt, he opened Hayat Fertility & Women's Health Center on January 25, 2007.

Dr. Ehab graduated in 1984. He completed his three-year residency program in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Cairo University School of Medicine in 1989 and his Fellowship in Assisted Reproduction and Infertility at Edòuard Herriot Hospital, University of Claude Bernard, Lyon, France in 1991.  Dr. Ehab is a highly trained and experienced fertility specialist, and has been practicing infertility and IVF for 18 years after completing his Fellowship in France. He worked as the chief fertility specialist in two highly reputable IVF centers in Cairo, before assisting in the foundation and establishment of the elite Hayat Center to deliver up-to-date fertility services—a combined with experience of more than 4000 IVF cycles. He is also highly experienced in gynecologic surgery and obstetric practice. He is the primary or contributing author on 23 papers in peer-reviewed journals; in 1999, he earned the Sorono award for the best paper published in the Middle East Fertility Journal. He is an active member of five international societies including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, the Middle East Fertility Society, the Egyptian Fertility Society and the Egyptian Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Ahmed El-Damen
Chief Embryologist

Ahmed El-Damen

Ahmed El-Damen obtained a Master of Science from the Faculty of Medicine at Palermo University in Italy on the “Psychological, Biomedical and Socio-Legal Aspects of Infertility” in 2011. He completed a Postgraduate Diploma on “Biochemical Analysis” from the Faculty of Science at Ain Shams University in 2013 and is in the process of completing a Master of Science in “Animal Biotechnology, Biotechnology of Assisted Reproduction” from the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute at the University of Sadat City. He is the General Secretary of the Egyptian Society of Clinical Embryologists (ESCE) and is an active member in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the American College of Embryology (EMBCOL), the Middle East Fertility Society (MEFS), the International Society for In Vitro Fertilization (ISIVF), and a number of other societies. El-Damen is an American Board Certified Embryology Technologist (EMT), certified by the American College of Embryology (EMBCOL) in 2011. He is also an ESHRE certified Senior Clinical Embryologist, certified by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in 2014. He participated in a research project with professor Ashok Agarwal, the head of the Reproductive Research Unit of Cleveland Clinic (Ohio, USA) and orally presented 3 research papers at the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) in 2008. El-Damen has fifteen years work experience in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technologies with success in managing all the aspects of that specialized type of work. He has worked as the IVF Laboratory Director and Chief Embryologist of Nile Badrawi Hospital and Dar Al-Maraa Center. At present, he is the IVF Laboratory Director and Chief Embryologist of Hayat Fertility Center (as of August 2015) and the Senior Clinical Embryologist at Sunrise Fertility Center.
